Heat Waves Plague Merced

With the fall semester right around the corner, UC Merced’s Bobcats are beginning to return to Merced. Some arrive on campus lugging their boxes to the dormitories one by one. Others are seen wandering in groups around campus. Still others are scattered about the local hot spots in downtown Merced, chatting with their friends in restaurants and café shops.

UCMPD Mentor Program

UC Merced attracts people from diverse backgrounds, but no matter where you came from, we don’t have to travel very far to be reminded of the drugs, gangs, and crime that are so common in impoverished communities.  Limited resources have left youth in these communities with little, if any organized activities – especially during the long days of summer.

Merced Hot Spots: Beat Boredom

Merced falls, without a doubt, on the small end of the college town scale.  Yet, this small town has still managed to pack a few surprises and hide a couple gems here and there.  So if you are in desperate need of somewhere to be or something to do that is as unrelated to the UC Merced campus as possible, you might just be in luck.

Reward Yourself: Summer Plans Abound for Bobcats

Summer is rapidly approaching for UC Merced students. After a long year of classes, homework assignments, midterms, finals, and everything else in between, students deserve to treat themselves. By treating yourself, I don’t just mean a day at the pool or a beach party with friends, but full-on vacations and non-stop events. After all you do throughout each school year, you deserve it!

Students Dance the Night Away at Spring Concert

The 2012 Spring Concert was brought to UC Merced by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) on Friday, April 27.The performances took place across the Scholars Lane Bridge in the South Bowl.

The 2012 Spring Concert was brought to UC Merced by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) on Friday, April 27.The performances took place across the Scholars Lane Bridge in the South Bowl.

The show opened with select members from Living Legends, a hip hop group from California.  They were followed by singer/songwriter, John West from Louisiana. The main act was Travis Porter, a rap group famous for the songs “Bring it Back” and “Make it Rain.” Travis Porter is a hip-hop act from Decatur, Georgia, comprised of stepbrothers Ali and Quez.

With all the excitement building for graduation and summer, it seems Fall semester is in the distant future—but for freshmen entering the University in August, it is a different story. After receiving acceptance letters earlier this year, they are anticipating the beginning of the year.  However, not many realize that they underwent an increasingly selective admissions process to attend UC Merced.

Potential Students Flock to Bobcat Day

Bobcat Day is an event that is meant to motivate those students that have already been accepted to UC Merced.  It is an event that involves the whole campus, where both students and faculty come together to inspire peers who are stepping onto this campus for the first time. 

Bobcat Day is an event that is meant to motivate those students that have already been accepted to UC Merced.  It is an event that involves the whole campus, where both students and faculty come together to inspire peers who are stepping onto this campus for the first time.

The Carol Tomlinson-Keasey quad was lined with booths of clubs and organizations that were ready to show what this small campus community has to offer. This allowed for interested students to talk and interact with various student service offices and representatives from each academic school.

UC Davis Chief of Police Resigns

The pepper spray incident at an Occupy UC Davis protest on November 18, 2011, is still having effects today toward the police department. UC Davis Police Chief Annette M. Spicuzza resigned April 19, 2012, stating that the decision was so people involved “could move forward.” The pepper spraying of about 11 students could have been prevented, and now the officers are confronting their mistakes.

Women's Basketball Signs Three New Players

The Recreation Center has announced the signing of three new players to UC Merced’s women’s basketball team. These players come from different walks of life, but share the same love, passion and drive for basketball. The first to be signed was Texas All-State Guard Samantha Oshiro. With two state championships under her belt, the Bobcats can use her leadership for the coming school year.  Oshiro is a versatile player and can knock down open shots.

Asian Fest 2012 a Great Success

This year’s Asian Fest at UC Merced, hosted by the Martial Arts Club (MAC), marked its seventh consecutive year. 

This year’s Asian Fest at UC Merced, hosted by the Martial Arts Club (MAC), marked its seventh consecutive year.

MAC explains that the Asian Fest “shows the diversity of the Asian cultures because they’re not all similar.” It is a growing campus event, and hosts a variety of Asian clubs, such as the Thai/Lao Club, the Korean Club, the Hmong Student Association, and more.

The four-day series, which occurs every academic year, provides all who are interested in research and scholarship with information about how to broaden one’s horizon and gain some experience in a chosen field of study. Some of the events are open to the general public as well.

Second Annual Earth Week Festival

UC Merced is a school of the twenty-first century, and its mission is centered in research, teaching, and service. This month, the Earth Week Festival demonstrated in many ways how UC Merced is taking innovative steps to fulfill its mission. The purpose for this project was to highlight one of the campus’ keystones: being green. Earth Week was all about raising awareness for sustainability and energy conservation.

New Coach to Lead Women's Basketball

Sacramento native Kevin Pham was chosen as the first head coach for the UC Merced Women’s Basketball Program. 

Sacramento native Kevin Pham was chosen as the first head coach for the UC Merced Women’s Basketball Program.

For two years at UC Berkeley, while working towards a degree in Economics, Pham served as student assistant for women’s basketball. His experience gave him the opportunity to work with some of the best guards in the Pac-12.

Parks Leadership Seminar Helping the World

With UC Merced, Yosemite, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco as their playground for discussion and learning field laboratories, more than 24 big names in conservation around the world will take part in the third National Parks Leadership Executive Seminar. The seminar will take place from April 17-28.

The seminar will take place from April 17-28.

These leaders from around the globe are confronted with new difficulties in protecting land, due to tight budgets and a quickly changing environment. Habitat loss and suburban and urban land encroachment don't help either.

Bobcat Art Show 2012

The annual UC Merced Bobcat Art Show is now in its seventh year. The art show has been around since our campus opened in 2005. Gail Benedict is the creator and founder of the show. She is a painter herself, and thought that bringing something like this to UC Merced would be very exciting. The showcase first began accepting submissions from students, staff, faculty, and family because Gail was unsure how many submissions she would get. That is why the original name was the Bobcat Family Art Show.

Electronic powerhouse Best Buy is planning to close several stores across the US, but what implications do their closures have for students?  Recently, news and speculation has grown around the decline in Best Buy stocks and revenues, and now closures are imminent.

While the 1,400 existing Best Buy stores around the United States are known to be the biggest electronic specialty stores, their closures are necessary to improve business according to Best Buy execs.

UC Merced Students Lobby in Washington

Over the weekend of March 23rd, instead of heading home for Spring Break, 8 UC Merced students packed their bags and headed to Washington, DC for the United States Students Association’s (USSA) 43rd Annual Grassroots Legislative Conference. ASUCM Executives Jonathan Ly, Alex Ela, Keith Ellis, Damion Harriman, and Arrash Abri, along with ASUCM Senator Jacob Malone and students Alma Fausto and Saema Adeeb flew to Washington D.C., in hopes of helping shape a federal budget that boosts higher education funding. The students were briefed on different legislative issues on the federal level to prepare for lobby visits with the Central Valley’s representatives.

Students Protest in Sacramento, Occupy Sit-Ins in the Rotunda

While many students went to class on Monday, March 5, others were in Sacramento to protest the tuition rise that occurs each year. Chants echoed in the marble halls of the State Capitol during the rally, protesting state budget cuts to higher education. Buses of students arrived from various Universities to show their support for the “1%” to pay to refund education. Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez told the students, “We can't do it alone. We need your help.” Students could be heard shouting in the Rotunda of the Capitol phrases such as “Education is a right, we are here to Occupy!” and “Educate, not incarcerate.”

Affirmative Action Case Reaches Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is now reconsidering the factor of race for admissions into colleges. Most universities and colleges use race to make sure they maintain their diversity. The Supreme Court is asking that this no longer be a factor. The question is: How could a decision like this affect our very own students and campus here at UC Merced?

Championing Change as Challenge Finalists

UC Merced's Green Campus program recently won our campus a finalist spot in a national sustainability competition. The program, the White House-endorsed Campus Champions of Change Challenge, asks competing campus representatives to submit a report of an activity they have done recently to promote sustainability; the five campuses with the greatest conservation won, and were invited to attend a special event today, March 15, at the White House.

Focus on Focii: Student Band Rocks out Forte

Student band, Focii, rocked a full house of about 25 people early this month with their upbeat energy and style. This up and coming band impressed attendees and attracted onlookers at one of their debut public performances on March 3 at Forte Yogurt in downtown Merced.

Men’s Volleyball hosts NCCVL Tournament

The UC Merced Men’s Volleyball Team hosted the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League (NCCVL) Tournament from March 3-4 on Hostetler Court. 

The UC Merced Men’s Volleyball Team hosted the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League (NCCVL) Tournament from March 3-4 on Hostetler Court.

The court was split in half, which created space for two games to be facilitated at the same time. The two-day event proved to be difficult, but the Bobcats pulled through. The Division II Tournament is comprised of two divisions, the North and South.  The Bobcats are a part of the South division, and so played six teams over the weekend.

Student Death at CAL : Overdose Tradgedy Leads to UC Regents Lawsuit

As college students, we are most likely used to listening to incidents related to alcohol and drugs. Sadly, students keep getting hurt in car crashes, drug overdoses, and alcohol intoxications across UC campuses.  Could it just be that students have indulged in excess partying, or is a lack of proper leadership from the university administration, something that may also fuel this general concern?

Campus Celebrates Recreation Center Expansion

On Thursday, February 23rd students, faculty, staff, and community members gathered on Muir Pass to sign the last steel beam of the Student Activities and Athletic Center expansion project and celebrate another commemorative moment in UC Merced history.
