A new collaboration allowing UC Merced to join a national nanotechnology-biology hub is made thanks to a five-year grant. This new collaboration will provide new opportunities and resources for students and faculty at UC Merced. Additionally, it also demonstrates UCM’s growing prestige across the US.

School of Natural Sciences Dean Juan Meza and Professor Mike Colvin have received a $175,000 per year grant for the next five years from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Beatings, prostitution, drug and alcohol abuse, and child rape are struggles more often relatable to women rather than men.  However, in Black N Blue Boys/Broken Men, playwright Dael Orlandersmith explores the struggles and issues of men whose stories often go unheard.

She has been awarded an Obie Award and Pulitzer Prize in recognition of her works Beauty’s Daughter and Yellowman, respectively. Orlandersmith has taken her works internationally to Europe and Australia, and now UC Merced.

Chlamydia has become a huge public health threat among young female college students in Merced as well as all around the country. 

Chlamydia has become a huge public health threat among young female college students in Merced as well as all around the country. 

Case reports have been increasing over the past 20 years.  According to the Centers of Disease and Control and Prevention, 1.3 million cases of chlamydia were reported in 2012. In California, there are currently more than 155,300 reported cases. In Merced County, there currently are 1,035 reported cases of chlamydia.

All UC’s to be Tobacco-Free in 2014

The UC system is on its way to becoming tobacco-free.  Last year, UC President Mark Yudof announced the initiative that requires all 10 campuses to be tobacco-free by 2014.

The two-year period allows time for each UC to implement the policy, and for smokers to acclimate. The policy states that the use of tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and also the sale of tobacco will be prohibited.

UC Riverside hosted the annual Students of Color Conference (SOCC) on the second weekend of November with 1200 students attending. The conference is a combination of workshops and speakers that all have the goal of providing a forum for individuals to discuss, explore, and educate themselves regarding a wide array of issues affecting people of color.

Lab coats, goggles, math and lab reports sum up the life of a typical pre-health student. Whether the goal is to be a doctor, an optometrist or a dentist, there is more to life for these students than their grade point average.

Students at UC Merced enjoy a variety of organizations geared to support them on the quest to becoming professionals. From fraternities and other organizations to workshops and advisers, a strong network has developed on campus for pre-med students.

On Wednesday, September 19, several members of a religious demonstration group visited the UC Merced campus, inflaming students with provocative speech. The group was constantly surrounded by a small crowd of students, whose own yelling often drowned out that of the protestors.

Mitt Romney’s pick for running mate may have ultimately convinced the far right that the Republican ticket isn’t so disappointing after all.  Although a potential Romney-Ryan administration has surely captured the conservative vote, the Republican nomination of the Wisconsin congressman for the vice presidency may have done more damage than good to the party’s prospects of cutting the Obama administration’s existence short.

With the fall semester right around the corner, UC Merced’s Bobcats are beginning to return to Merced. Some arrive on campus lugging their boxes to the dormitories one by one. Others are seen wandering in groups around campus. Still others are scattered about the local hot spots in downtown Merced, chatting with their friends in restaurants and café shops.

The Sixth Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration, hosted by the Latino Associated Students along with other organizations on campus, was another great success this year. The event was one of the biggest of the year, with a large turnout, lots of food, and performances.

The student run event lasted two days, and each day was filled with activities, a variety of food, and informational sessions for those who do not know why Latinos all over the country celebrate this particular day.

UC Merced students are getting ready for the finale of the 2012 spring semester.  As we are getting closer to the end of the school year, nostalgia is prevalent among Bobcats, especially senior students who are graduating. Like every year, UC Merced says goodbye to the annual graduating class.

As Commencement was approaching, seniors expressed worry about not having a guest speaker lined up for commencement. However, earlier this month, school administrators released the news that the speaker will be former Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante.

Last Friday, comedian Jason Stuart visited campus for an hour of stand-up. The event, which was free to the public, showcased a notable talent with the LGBT community, and demonstrated a huge amount of acceptance on the behalf of all UC Merced students.

On the rainy Thursday night of April 12, the Trevor Project and the Social Justice Programs collaborated to provide UCM students with a sequence of informational events to raise awareness of the LGBT community.

The Trevor Project is an organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT youth.

The event began around 6:30 p.m. with lifeguard training, followed by a short film and ending with the candlelight vigil.

Though it has been well over a month since George Zimmerman’s shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sandford, Florida, the case has continued to be widely publicized, and its potential implications heavily discussed.

Though it has been well over a month since George Zimmerman’s shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sandford, Florida, the case has continued to be widely publicized, and its potential implications heavily discussed.

On February 26 of this year, Trayvon Martin, a black 17-year-old, was returning home, when he was shot and killed by Hispanic 28-year-old, George Zimmerman. Though the incident was not reported outside of Florida for over a week after it occurred, accusations of racial profiling and media bias have since turned it into an international incident.

With the growth rate of students at UC Merced every year, students work hard to build up opportunities in our community. As you may know, a portion of our community continues to remain medically underserved due to gaps in our healthcare system. Fortunately, our community has access to dedicated, local health providers, such as the Golden Valley Health Centers that continue to provide quality comprehensive care for our communities. 

With the growth rate of students at UC Merced every year, students work hard to build up opportunities in our community. Over the weekend of March 23rd, instead of heading home for Spring Break, 8 UC Merced students packed their bags and headed to Washington, DC for the United States Students Association’s (USSA) 43rd Annual Grassroots Legislative Conference. ASUCM Executives Jonathan Ly, Alex Ela, Keith Ellis, Damion Harriman, and Arrash Abri, along with ASUCM Senator Jacob Malone and students Alma Fausto and Saema Adeeb flew to Washington D.C., in hopes of helping shape a federal budget that boosts higher education funding. The students were briefed on different legislative issues on the federal level to prepare for lobby visits with the Central Valley’s representatives.

UC Merced's weekly Human Rights Films Series brought us Mimi Chakarova's, The Price of Sex, on February 24. Forgoing the trite adjectives that normally accompany descriptions of these types of documentaries, the content of the film is simply horrifying.

The Supreme Court is now reconsidering the factor of race for admissions into colleges. Most universities and colleges use race to make sure they maintain their diversity. The Supreme Court is asking that this no longer be a factor. The question is: How could a decision like this affect our very own students and campus here at UC Merced?
