UC Merced hosts a leadership conference for high school students in order to encourage them to take part in leadership and allow them to learn more about UCM.

 

UC Merced hosts a leadership conference for high school students in order to encourage them to take part in leadership and allow them to learn more about UCM.

The conference—called You See Leaders—is a one-day-event hosted, sponsored, planned and staffed by ASUCM. Members of ASUCM want to promote leadership through their jobs and responsibilities.

The managing committee, this year lead by Chairperson Ana Zivanovic, puts in a huge amount of time and effort in order to properly plan and organize the day.

Two high school football players in Steubenville, Ohio were convicted of raping a teenage girl during an alcohol-fueled party.

 

Two high school football players in Steubenville, Ohio were convicted of raping a teenage girl during an alcohol-fueled party.  The two offenders, Trent Mays, 17, and Ma'lik Richmond, 16, were tried as juveniles and sentenced time in a juvenile corrections facility. In addition to being accused of raping the girl, Mays was also charged for releasing a nude photo of the rape victim. Mays will serve a minimum of two years, while Richmond will serve a minimum of one year.

The 2020 Project at UC Merced is the current phase of a larger sustainability plan called the Triple Zero Commitment established by the Long-Range Development Plan (LRDP). In what may seem like a series of suspensions, the Chi-Mu chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) has been suspended for the Spring 2013 semester and placed on one year of probation here at UC Merced.  The suspension comes as a consequence for reported hazing from the chapter.

A new collaboration allowing UC Merced to join a national nanotechnology-biology hub is made thanks to a five-year grant. This new collaboration will provide new opportunities and resources for students and faculty at UC Merced. Additionally, it also demonstrates UCM’s growing prestige across the US.

School of Natural Sciences Dean Juan Meza and Professor Mike Colvin have received a $175,000 per year grant for the next five years from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The three council members answered questions from all who attended the event, which was open to all on campus and provided food and drinks to those who asked a question of any of the present city officials.

UC Merced students are bridging the gap between the community and the university through service and charity works. Both fraternity Kappa Sigma and sorority Tri-Delta have been working with the local community in service projects.

Steven Ruilova, the current Kappa Sigma Philanthropy Chair, identifies his job as to try to get as many opportunities as possible for Kappa Sigma members to get involved with organizations, as the goal of the fraternity is not just to fundraise for causes.

"Jesus Christ Superstar" is a rock musical based on the Gospel's version of the last week of Christ's life from the point of view of Judas, Christ's betrayer.

The Joseph E. Gallo Recreation Center bustled with most unusual liveliness for a Thursday morning. Equipped with résumés and smiles, many hopeful students made their way into the gym sporting their most professional attire. Such a sight is indicative of only one thing--the annual Career and Internship Fair.

On March 26, the U.S. Supreme Court will have a hearing on Proposition 8. This will be the first case dealing with same-sex marriage in the Supreme Court of the United States.

 

On March 26, the U.S. Supreme Court will have a hearing on Proposition 8. This will be the first case dealing with same-sex marriage in the Supreme Court of the United States. Should the Supreme Court decide to strike down Prop 8, it would remove the decision that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
President Obama is one individual who supports overturning Prop 8. He spoke to the Supreme Court, asserting that Prop 8 serves an illegitimate purpose, and is based on “impermissible justice.”

Professor Elliott Campbell’s co-authored paper about the effects of mountaintop mining on global warming was selected by Environmental Research Letters (ERL) as one of the best papers of 2012.

In his paper, Campbell and his co-authors, James F. Fox and Peter M. Acton of the University of Kentucky, Lexington, write about how the practice of mountaintop mining causes places of vegetation that are originally carbon-removing to become transformed into places that are carbon-emitting.

The “Jellyfish” is a multiple-surface lens that uses mirrors to focus LED light to create a brighter beam. It is a type of aplanatic optic device; it is designed to eliminate two kinds of aberrations, namely the spherical aberration and coma.
