If there is one thing we can expect of a film boasting Ang Lee as its director and producer it is color, in every sense of the word, color. Moviegoers are immediately overwhelmed by the bright and breathtaking colors of the natural world in the opening credits alone.

Life of Pi is a smorgasbord of cultural experience and religious difference. It is a journey that pulls us outside of our sedentary American lives and travels between a modern Montreal and an older French India.

As usual, this summer has been filled with one epic after another.  All of the same caliber, all no more and no less than what the seasonally faithful movie goer/air conditioning devotees expected.  Therefore, what better way is there to break out the farewells to yet another jam-packed, “hotter than hades” season than one final epic flick?  Not only does this film fit the bill, but it even goes so far as to include the very word “Legacy” in its title.  Clearly, there is nothing more epic than a legacy!

Anders Behring Breivik’s name has been plastered across the international media lately – and he’s loving it. Breivik, 33, is currently undergoing trial in Oslo, Norway, for 77 murders that occurred last July.

But unlike most American criminals, Breivik does not deny that he was responsible for the deaths. Rather, Breivik is pleading not guilty because of self-defense; that the murders he committed were in the name of national security and necessary to prevent gross harm to himself and his country.

Though it has been well over a month since George Zimmerman’s shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sandford, Florida, the case has continued to be widely publicized, and its potential implications heavily discussed.

On February 26 of this year, Trayvon Martin, a black 17-year-old, was returning home, when he was shot and killed by Hispanic 28-year-old, George Zimmerman. Though the incident was not reported outside of Florida for over a week after it occurred, accusations of racial profiling and media bias have since turned it into an international incident.

As the 2011-2012 season is almost at an end at Playhouse Merced, the Tony Award winning musical, “Parade,” has taken the stage.

The musical, written by Alfred Uhry, was first produced on Broadway in 1998, co-conceived and directed by Harold Prince, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown.

Set in Georgia in 1913, the musical is based on the true story of Jewish factory owner, Leo Frank (Scott “Dusty” Guthier), who was wrongly accused of a horrible crime involving one of his employees, 13-year-old Mary Phagan (Jilliann Giacalone).

The recently revived Hammer Film Productions falls gracefully back into the gothic form that made the company legendary.  The Woman in Black is a chilling ghost story based on a 1983 horror fiction novel by Susan Hill, which bears the same title.  Director James Watkins might just snag a title as the new champion of the thriller genre and, as such, pays abundant homage to the hallmark of the jumpy horror flick.  The giant Victorian mansion, in which much of the film takes place, is the epitome of the “haunted house.”  If there is a floorboard nearby, it creaks.  If there is a rusty doorknob in sight, it rattles.  Of course, it all must be emphasized by dim, flickering candles, which offer the only source of light throughout the eternally night-encased house.

Fidel Cervantes, a 19-year-old undergraduate student from Delhi, who has taken a keen interest in education policy, was appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Delhi Unified School District in September. While clearly the least experienced among his much older colleagues, he is nonetheless undaunted by the part. So why has Cervantes decided to concern himself with K-12 education? He aims to inspire.

Over the past decade, education has been the subject of draconian cuts in America's list of foundations that transcend valuable investments. As such, one rarely discovers stories of inspiration amidst the turmoil. Enter Larry L. Powell-- superintendent of Fresno County Schools-- a position that oversees 325 schools, and the 195,000 students that go with them. Powell, 63, recently took a great sacrifice of cutting his salary over the next three years of over $800,000 dollars to $31,000 a year-- $10,000 less than that of a first year teacher.

The first week of school was marked by an unexpected event on August 24, when at 4:00 am, two UC Merced students were shot in South Merced.

Prior to the assault, the victims were coming from a party and decided to grab fast food, and stopped at a red light at the intersection between “R” street and “16th” street. They saw two men standing in the road, who started shooting at them for no evident reason.
