One thing I definitely knew I wanted to experience while in college was studying abroad.  I figured it would be in some beautiful, English-speaking European country where I could easily communicate with and relate to the people.

Mitt Romney’s pick for running mate may have ultimately convinced the far right that the Republican ticket isn’t so disappointing after all.  Although a potential Romney-Ryan administration has surely captured the conservative vote, the Republican nomination of the Wisconsin congressman for the vice presidency may have done more damage than good to the party’s prospects of cutting the Obama administration’s existence short.

With the fall semester right around the corner, UC Merced’s Bobcats are beginning to return to Merced. Some arrive on campus lugging their boxes to the dormitories one by one. Others are seen wandering in groups around campus. Still others are scattered about the local hot spots in downtown Merced, chatting with their friends in restaurants and café shops.

UC Merced is a school of the twenty-first century, and its mission is centered in research, teaching, and service. This month, the Earth Week Festival demonstrated in many ways how UC Merced is taking innovative steps to fulfill its mission. The purpose for this project was to highlight one of the campus’ keystones: being green. Earth Week was all about raising awareness for sustainability and energy conservation.

With a little over a month to go, there are many questions being asked about the upcoming commencement ceremony for the Class of 2012. Who will be the keynote speaker for the ceremony? Will it compare to commencements in the past? How is the planning for the commencement currently going? These are all questions looming in the heads of many who will be a part of this huge milestone.

After years of planning the construction of a train system that would connect the Bay Area, Southern California, and the Central Valley together, Californians may not be able to see this project implemented.  Why the sudden change? One factor: money, or rather, a lack of it.

Traveling from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 2 hours and 38 minutes will soon become possible.  California’s High-Speed Rail, the first true high-speed rail system of the nation, is on its way.  As of Spring 2011, the California High-Speed Rail Authority has received $6.3 billion in funding.  Construction of the initial infrastructure will begin in the second half of 2012.  The first segment will break ground in the Central Valley containing two sections, stretching the 65 miles from Merced to Fresno and 113 miles from Fresno to Bakersfield.  The goal is to eventually cover 800 miles of California soil between the Bay Area, Fresno, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
