The air was buzzing with excitement as a large crowd of students, staff, faculty, community members, and local news stations lined up along Muir Pass, awaiting the grand opening of the new Student Activities and Athletics Center (SAAC) last Friday.

Plans for a new gym began in 2010, back when there were only a little over 4,300 studentsenrolled at UC Merced. It was evident that having only one gym, the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center, was not enough to satisfy the expanding demand.

On Thursday, March 15, Chancellor Dorothy Leland began the groundbreaking ceremony for Science and Engineering II. The $88M building is scheduled to be completed before the fall semester of 2014, and will effectively double the campus’ room for natural science research.

United States Congressman Dennis Cardoza, D-CA, recently announced he will not seek re-election in 2012. 

United States Congressman Dennis Cardoza, D-CA, recently announced he will not seek re-election in 2012.

On October 20, Cardoza released a statement stating he does not plan to run for public office during the next election. He will finish his fifth term in Congress this year as the representative of the 18th District of California. The 18th District encompasses various cities in the Central Valley, including Merced.

“No pomp, no circumstance” is the way UC President Mark Yudof described the ceremony inaugurating UC Merced Chancellor Dorothy Leland, and according to him that is exactly how she wanted it. While these same ceremonies in the past have been more elaborate, Leland opted for a simple affair citing that it was more economically responsible to do so.

Over the summer, UC Merced took a major step in establishing a medical school. 

Over the summer, UC Merced took a major step in establishing a medical school.

Last September, the sister campuses, UC Davis and UC Merced, announced a partnership to begin educating medical students in the valley.

On July 19th, UC Merced and the UC Davis School of Medicine announced the five pioneering students who are currently enrolled in the UC Merced San Joaquin Valley Program in Medical Education (PRIME).

Chancellor Dorothy Leland is delighted to welcome these students.

UC Merced had no shortage of ceremonies for the ten year anniversary of the events of September 11th, 2001. The oak tree in the roundabout in front of the Leo and Dottie Kolligian Library, which has become the campus location for tribute and memorial, was the location for the moment of silence hosted by Chancellor Dorothy Leland and Merced Mayor Bill Spriggs on Friday, September 9th.

Induction day was a little different this year at UC Merced.  Senator Barbara Boxer made a visit to the grounds to discuss clean energy, take a tour of campus facilities, and meet with a select group of students.

The practicality of the degree came in second to the quest and passion for knowledge for Dorothy Leland.

“I got the question, ‘How are you going to make a living?’” said UC Merced’s newest chancellor. “But it didn’t really matter to me because I was excited about what I was studying.”

The initial love of literature took Leland on a path to her eventual focus in philosophy where she was able to explore her interests in different fields and cultivated her attraction to interdisciplinary work.

On July 15, the UCM community received word from Chancellor Leland and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Keith Alley, that UCM is now an accredited institution by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). 

On July 15, the UCM community received word from Chancellor Leland and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Keith Alley, that UCM is now an accredited institution by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

The WASC Commission granted UC Merced an initial accreditation of seven years, which is the maximum amount of time allowed. Under WASC’s standards of accreditation, the process was successfully accomplished in a total time of 8.5 years, the shortest amount of time possible.

On June 30, Sung-Mo “Steve” Kang officially left his role as chancellor to return to teaching and research at UC Santa Cruz.  Following a national search, the University of California Board of Regents appointed Dorothy Leland the third chancellor of UC Merced.
