Students interested in helping solve the humanitarian crisis in North Korea have started a UC Merced chapter of LiNK (Liberty in North Korea), a nationwide organization of clubs dedicated to this cause. Club meetings are slated to begin in the spring semester, when the club will be fully formed.

Construction of the new eastern span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, which was damaged by the 1989 Bay Area earthquake, has been underway since 2005-- in China. California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) determined that the eastern span of the bridge would need to be replaced as a result of the damage it sustained, while the western span would need to undergo seismic retrofitting in an effort to improve  earthquake safety.
