  • The Recreation Center has announced the signing of three new players to UC Merced’s women’s basketball team. These players come from different walks of life, but share the same love, passion and drive for basketball. The first to be signed was Texas All-State Guard Samantha Oshiro. With two state championships under her belt, the Bobcats can use her leadership for the coming school year.  Oshiro is a versatile player and can knock down open shots. 

  • The annual Cat Trail 5k Race took place on a beautiful Saturday morning, April 7, with a little over 50 runners coming out to show their Bobcat spirit. 

  • Sacramento native Kevin Pham was chosen as the first head coach for the UC Merced Women’s Basketball Program. 

  • Ultimate Frisbee is a frantic and fast-paced game which contains elements from sports such as basketball, soccer, and football—combined, it makes up a modern interpretation of these fundamental sports. It is compared to basketball because man-to-man coverage is required; soccer because of the player movement on the field; and there are elements of football because there are touchdowns. The objective is to pass the disc to the team members in the opposing end zone to score. It also requires hand dexterity throughout the course of the game.  

  • The UC Merced Men’s Volleyball Team hosted the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League (NCCVL) Tournament from March 3-4 on Hostetler Court

  • On Saturday, February 11, the UC Merced Women’s Softball Team took part in the South Pacific Conference, and defeated UCLA 13-12. The Bobcats are part of the National Club Softball Association League and have worked extremely hard in order to be in the position they are today. 

  • The UC Merced Bobcats kept their heads in the game when they defeated their conference rival Holy Names University on Saturday, February 4(74-71). Excited fans, friends, family and faculty from both UC Merced and Holy Names filled the stands. Before becoming NAIA approved, the Men’s Basketball team played Holy Names as a club team.  When asked how this rivalry started, Javon Barrino stated that the team disrespected them during a game and did not take the competition seriously. 

  • While many sports fans were sitting at home watching the 49ers game on Sunday evening, the Men’s Basketball team played against non-conference rival, UC Santa Cruz.  This proved to be a busy weekend for the Men’s basketball team; they had two games back to back. One of which they won against Simpson College (77-66) on Saturday, January 21. Unfortunately, the ball did not bounce in their favor during their game against the UCSC Slugs (71-76) on Sunday. 

  • While everyone was off on winter break, the UCM Men’s Basketball team was hard at work. They played two-a-days the week before their game in Santa Barbara against the University of British Columbia. On December 29, the UC Merced Men’s Basketball defeated the University of British Columbia with a final score of 88-79. 

  • The UC Merced Men’s Basketball team fought a good fight at their first home game at the NAIA level. The gym was jam-packed with students, faculty, parents, and members of the Merced Community. Excitement filled the court as the UC Merced Men’s Basketball team members were announced. The crowd was sitting at the edge of their seats, as UC Merced and Fresno Pacific played head-to-head throughout the game.
