  • The ASUCM election includes two fee referenda – a $35 fee to fund campus activities, and a $10 fee to fund the Early Childhood Educational Center (ECEC).

  • On Wednesday, September 19, several members of a religious demonstration group visited the UC Merced campus, inflaming students with provocative speech. The group was constantly surrounded by a small crowd of students, whose own yelling often drowned out that of the protestors.

  • Less than two weeks after the start of the new school year, UC Merced’s clubs and organizations gathered to introduce and advertise themselves to new and returning students. Despite the heat of the event, held at midday during the beginning of September, Scholar’s Lane was swarming with students, tables, chairs, banners, handouts, and sign-up sheets.

  • The Lady Bobcats destroyed their opposition at the Holiday Inn Express Invitational with a perfect showing. On Friday, August 24, they defeated Arizona’s Embry-Riddle and the Oregon Institute of Technology, then followed with a three-set destruction of West Coast Baptist on Saturday.

  • As of August 16, Facebook has a new competitor at UC Merced – At the Pool. The new social media service seeks to differentiate itself from its rivals by facilitating electronic social interactions differently – instead of sites like Facebook, which developed along a model geared for networking and meeting large numbers of people, At the Pool seeks to promote individual friendships that will last.

  • Recently, UC Merced students have taken advantage of Facebook’s Groups feature. Though the feature once was a mere substitute for the outdated “List” function, it now allows sub-groups and restricted access. The UC Merced Facebook group, for example, is limited to users who have an “@ucmerced.edu” email address, and contains a series of subgroups for everything from majors to class years to interest groups.

  • Anders Behring Breivik’s name has been plastered across the international media lately – and he’s loving it. Breivik, 33, is currently undergoing trial in Oslo, Norway, for 77 murders that occurred last July.

  • Last Friday, comedian Jason Stuart visited campus for an hour of stand-up. The event, which was free to the public, showcased a notable talent with the LGBT community, and demonstrated a huge amount of acceptance on the behalf of all UC Merced students.

  • Though it has been well over a month since George Zimmerman’s shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sandford, Florida, the case has continued to be widely publicized, and its potential implications heavily discussed.

  • On Thursday, March 15, Chancellor Dorothy Leland began the groundbreaking ceremony for Science and Engineering II. The $88M building is scheduled to be completed before the fall semester of 2014, and will effectively double the campus’ room for natural science research.
