The Class of 2012 has raised approximately $13,000. This sum includes approximately $8,000 raised by the class and a matching gift of $5,000 from the Westly Foundation.

After completing a survey with options for a Class Gift, the majority of students from the Class of 2012 selected to have their class gift be to fix the WiFi.

In what may seem like a series of suspensions, the Chi-Mu chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) has been suspended for the Spring 2013 semester and placed on one year of probation here at UC Merced.  The suspension comes as a consequence for reported hazing from the chapter.     

Bobcat pride came out in a whole spectrum of colors during UC Merced’s seventh annual Pride Week.  The support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBT Spectrum) came out in stride and boasted a variety of workshops and events geared towards educating students and the Merced community and promoting awareness.

After doing a bit of research, I came across the Jantz Café and Bakery website. The website provides the menus from their locations in Atwater, Mariposa, and Merced, as well as many other useful bits of information. On the website, the “About Us” section commanded my attention. It was an interesting, anecdotal presentation of their history, and a sort of mission statement.

Fourteen years ago, Playhouse Merced produced the legendary rock classic "Jesus Christ Superstar" by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, for the very first time. "Jesus Christ Superstar" is a rock musical based on the Gospel's version of the last week of Christ's life from the point of view of Judas, Christ's betrayer. 

On March 26, the U.S. Supreme Court will have a hearing on Proposition 8. This will be the first case dealing with same-sex marriage in the Supreme Court of the United States.

In my forays into Merced, a couple of things have become apparent. One is that there is plenty to do on the weekends. This is evident by the pulse and glow scorching from the marquee at the Merced Theater. Another is that there are plenty of eateries willing to accommodate the hungry masses who venture downtown at night.

Graham Thompson is a graduate student in the Cognitive Mechanics (Cogmech) Laboratory at UC Merced under the supervision of Professor Christopher Kello. He is interested in large scale structuring of the mind and the network science and dynamics approach to modeling.

Who says you’re too young to lead? Terima Nagatani is only a freshman, but he has already decided on what his legacy at UC Merced will be. He is planning on initiating UC Merced’s first Kendo club. 

The UC Merced men and women's basketball teams hosted the William Jessup Warriors in the final game of the regular season last Saturday.

The restaurant scene in Merced has been impacted by the arrival of a new eatery in recent days. The Five Ten Bistro began conducting business in early January in a space it shares with the After Five Bar and Lounge in Downtown Merced. It is conveniently located in the row of buildings that line Bob Hart Square at 510 W Main St.

UC Merced received a little holiday gift from IT in the form of a new My UC Merced Portal. 

Saturday afternoon’s weather forecast predicted on and off showers throughout the day. While this may have discouraged many from their morning runs, it didn’t stop the buzz of activity in the Lantern. The Kolligian Library’s lobby area was filled with the energy and the type of excitement that only precedes large events.

UC Riverside hosted the annual Students of Color Conference (SOCC) on the second weekend of November with 1200 students attending. The conference is a combination of workshops and speakers that all have the goal of providing a forum for individuals to discuss, explore, and educate themselves regarding a wide array of issues affecting people of color.

The Chess Club is one of UC Merced’s newest special interest clubs on campus. This year’s annual clubs and organizations fair marked the beginning of the Chess Club.

Congratulations to the new Mr. and Ms. UC Merced, Matthew Wainwright and Natalie Williams. Last Sunday, November 4, American Women Making a Difference (AWMD) hosted the second annual Mr. and Ms. UC Merced competition in COB 102.
